It’s early release Wednesday (September 19) and the West Regional Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library is offering something to entertain elementary schoolers.  From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., kids can make a craft item with materials and direction from library staffers.  It’s free and children of all ages are welcome.

Bring the kids to the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens  Saturday for a free event, Words of Art: A Children’s Book Fair and Family Literacy Day.  The event is from noon to 4 p.m. and includes storytelling, readings, art activities, a scavenger hunt and book signings.  More than 30 children’s authors, including artist and writer Rick Cannizzaro will be on hand.  Musician and storyteller Ajamu Mutima also will be performing.

When is $300 for a kid’s birthday party a good deal?  When it includes a two-hour room rental, “shaggy dog” cake, pizzas, cups and plates, craft activities, goody bags and an official party host.  And, since the party is at the Jacksonville Humane Society, the fee also includes a visit by a JHS doggie ambassador and a tour of the adoption center.  Suitable for children 6 to 12; $50 deposit required.  Contact the education department at education@jaxhumane.org.
